Solar Impulse 2 has started its voyage

It looks like there is no need for using fossil fuels anymore! The electric motors proved their capabilities. The first flight of the first solar powered plane has started! This aircraft took from Abu Dhabi and reached Muscat in Oman at 16:14 GMT. The flight lasted 12 hours, and in that time it covered 400km. The pilots are Andre Borschbeg and Bertrand Piccard, both from Switzerland! Only one pilot can fly this plane at a time.

The goal, of the pilot and aircraft are huge! In the next five months they will move from one continent to another, and even cross the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean! During this mission, they will stop at different places, to rest and to carry out maintenance and to promote clean technology. Andre Borschbeg announced that they will have to fly 5 days and 5 nights to cross big oceans, but it will be a challenge, and they will succeed in it.

This aircraft is really special. It has a wingspan of 72 meters and weight of 2.3 tones. Boing 747 has a wingspan of 68.5 meters and weight of 300 tons. Solar impulse 2 has 17.000 solar cells, located in its wings! Energy dense lithium-ion batteries, are used for saving the energy and enabling this plane to fly during the night. This will be very useful during the flight across oceans. The top speed is only 70 km/h.

The main goal of this project is to promote people to use clean energy sources. One of the best clean energy sources is the sun! Already, many countries are investing in similar technologies. According to some sources, in 40 years, solar energy will be the main energy source in the world.
