The New Legislation Legitimizing Same-Sex Marriages Brings Smiles On Some Faces
In a victory for those campaigning for gay-rights, a vote of 5-4 made same-sex marriages a constitutional right in the US. Under the new law observed under Obergefell v. Hodges case, the US Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in the US.
The earlier law banning same-sex marriages is believed to be a curtailment of liberty to enter into a union called marriage. The new law that sanctions same-sex marriages is the work of several decades of hard work on the part of activists and lawyers. It triggered a whole lot of celebration among US citizens. The White House threw up bright colors celebrating the new law passed by the Supreme Court.
The new legislation has come in view of the drastic changes the society in the US is going through. Several polls reflect the approval granted by the public for the new legislation. No state in the US can ban same-sex marriage under the new law. In doing so, the US has joined the league of 21 nations without any restrictions to same-sex marriages. Such couples are to have equal rights as normal heterosexual couples have. They are to be issued legal birth certificates too, which are to see them through good and proper education.
US President Barrack Obama congratulated the nation on the new law. Massachusetts emerged as the first state to pass laws that legitimized gay marriages in 2004. There was a huge applause from supporters of gay rights, while there was also a backlash from conservatives in 31 states. They banned such unions in these states. Quite a bit of this has been changed by the ruling of the Supreme Court, although 13 states still adhere to the old law.
