The use of marijuana as a medicine in Puerto Rico was legalised by an order issued by Puerto Rico governor Alejandro Garcia Pdilla after a long public debate on the issue. This way, some derivatives from the cannabis plant can be used as a medicine. The order is to be immediately implemented, although a time of three months was given to see if the order were properly implemented, its effects on the public coupled with whatever future action was possible on the issue.
Garcia felt convinced of the aptness of the decision taken by the authorities. It is believed to boost the quality of life of people in the island. The order is believed to provide relief to many people suffering because of lack of proper treatment in the wake of a ban on marijuana.
A comprehensive outline on the legal use of marijuana for medicinal purposes is to be issued. As of now, marijuana is employed as a medicine throughout the US as an effective treatment for pain related with migraines, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and AIDS.
Use of marijuana as a medicine is already legal in 23 states of the US. Besides Peurto Rico, a law was passed in Jamaica legalising the use of marijuana in the field of medicine.
The debate on the use of marijuana in the US territory is going on since 2013, when legislators from the island conducted a debate on the issue. A final decision was never taken. It is not clear whether marijuana is to be imported from elsewhere to be used as a medicine or if it is to be indegenously produced under licenses issued by the government.
