The South China Sea dispute is going out of control as many nations are fighting over territory and the resources. The United States government has accused China for destabilizing the security environment in the region. The East Asia’s top U.S. diplomat has expressed several concerns over construction of islands in the area.
Danny Russel, Assistant Secretary of State informed press about the impact of militarization of the area. The construction in the international waters may violate many charters. This contradicts the China’s stand which says it is trying to reduce security tensions in the area. The South East Asian US allies like Philippines is also claiming the South China Sea.
Over 2000 acre area has been reclaimed from the sea by China, according to the government. The construction has been done by destroying marine life and coral reefs beneath. The freedom of navigation of other countries has been violated by China. The busiest sea route from west to East Asia passes from this place.
Expert says this move by China is aimed to send strong signals over Strategic and Economic dialogue in Washington D.C. The annual event will discuss strategies to neutralize China. The Chinese government said that the construction phase will be completed soon. The island will have scientific research, search and rescue facilities along with military applications.
The China underlined the civilian applications of the project and the benefit it will bring. The US government said that China’s actions are not contributing to the peace in the region.
