NDA Lacks Numbers Required To Effect A Comprehensive Ban On Cow-Slaughter

Addressing a gathering of spiritual leaders, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said a comprehensive ban on cow slaughter in India was the need of the hour, but the number-game in the incumbent parliament was not favourable to it being implemented.

The point of contention is that a consensus needs to be evolved in this direction. The problem faced by NDA is that they are not in a majority in Rajya Sabha. They have a problem to face when they are to get ordinary bills passed. Building a consensus on the issue of a comprehensive ban on cow-slaughter is going to be a tough one.

While states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat had successfully implemented the ban on slaughtering bovine animals for food, there were quite a few states in India that displayed dissonance towards the ban. Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar shied away from the ban. Beef forms an important part of the diet of several members of the minorities in Goa.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said his government had made laws against cow-slaughter stricter. His government had been instrumental in amending the earlier legislation that was found deficient in several points.

The new law extends the ban to even consuming beef. Storing beef in any form or even shifting it from one place to another comprises an offence, as per the amended law against cow-slaughter.

The incumbent government in Madhya Pradesh is in favour of consuming a vegetarian diet. There were several proposals to set up slaughterhouses with modern facilities, but they were turned down by his government. An ardent advocate of a vegetarian diet, Chouhan is even against consumption of eggs.
