The police arrested a young white man under suspicion that he killed nine people during a Bible study in a Charleston church, adding that it is probably a racial hatred crime. The church in which the shooting took place was visited by African-Americans. The police were chasing the suspect for 14 straight hours.
Dylan Roof, 21, was arrested 220 miles from Charleston, in North Carolina. He was flown into South Carolina just hours after he was arrested. Roof is, according to his uncle, impressed with the notion about the white race being superior, and he was not afraid to show his fascination on social media. To make matters worse, Roof received a gun as a present for his 21st birthday. Roof is scheduled to appear before a judge today, but only via a video link from the Charleston detention center.
Roof is suspected of killing four pastors, one of which is a Democratic state Senator, and five other people in a church popularly called “Mother Emanuel.” The victims are aged between 26 and 87. Three people survived the attack, including a five-year-old boy who avoided being shot by playing dead.
"The fact that this took place in a black church obviously raises questions about a dark part of our history," said U.S. President Barack Obama. "Once again, innocent people were killed in part because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no trouble getting their hands on a gun."
